CLEP
Taking
CLEP exams can shorten the time it takes to earn your degree, allow
you to skip general introductory courses, and even satisfy a proficiency
requirement by demonstrating that you've already mastered the content.
CLEP exams can reduce the number of courses you need to graduate, saving
hundreds of dollars in tuition. The College Level Examination Program
(CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program. More
than 2,800 accredited institutions of higher education award credit
for satisfactory scores on CLEP exams. CLEP offers a way to receive
credit for "what you know."
What
CLEP exams are available?
There
are about 30 CLEP exams available to you which cover the more traditional
college subject areas. The majority of exams are 90 minutes long. With
the exception of English Composition with Essay, the tests are composed
of multiple choice and fill-in questions. All CLEP exams are administered
on computer (CLEP-CBT). The examination is preceded by a tutorial that
explains how to take the exam on computer. CLEP-CBT provides instant
scores results to test-takers, so you will know the day of the test
how you performed.

Policies
and Procedures
- You may earn
no more than 24 credits through CLEP.
- You may not repeat
a particular exam within a year of your first attempt.
- Credit earned
through an exam must not duplicate credit you have already earned
for the same course. This means that you cannot CLEP out of a course
you have already taken in college.
- You may not earn
credit-by-exam in a course that is equivalent to, more elementary
than, or substantially overlaps another course in which you have already
obtained credit. If you are currently enrolled in a language course
other than English and want credit for a more introductory course(s),
you must take the exam for that course before the midterm of the course
in which you are currently enrolled. This means that you cannot CLEP
out of a prerequisite for a course in which you are currently enrolled.
If you need to CLEP out of the foreign language course in which you
are currently enrolled, you must do so before mid semester. An exception to this policy will be made in the area of Composition for students fulfilling degree requirements in the 2007-08 catalog. In this catalog FLC will be implementing the state-wide guaranteed general education core known as gtPathways. The state has determined that students must post credit for both Introductory Composition and Intermediate Composition in order to fulfill the core. The credit may be course credit or exam credit. For this reason, students who have earned credit for intermediate composition at FLC or at another institution will be allowed to take the CLEP Composition test retroactively in order to fulfill the state requirement that students earn credit for both Introductory Composition and Intermediate Composition.
- Credit earned
by exam becomes part of your permanent academic record after you successfully
complete one semester of regular coursework at FLC. This means that
you may take as much credit-by-exam as you like, provided it is under
the 24 unit limit. However, it will not become part of you academic
record until you complete your first semester. If you leave FLC before
the end of your first semester, credit-by-exam will not appear on
your transcripts.
- Fort Lewis College
offers credit for only the College Board CLEP exams listed above.
FLC only recognizes the passing scores listed on our CLEP brochure, available at the Testing Center. FLC does offer credit for some locally prepared challenge exams. Students
may receive credit-by-exam similar to CLEP credit by taking such an
exam.

How
do I sign up for the CLEP?
The
CLEP exam is administered by appointment at the Testing Center, Noble 287. Each CLEP assessment takes about 90 minutes. To
register for a CLEP exam, fill out the CLEP
Appointment Request Form.
Cost
CLEP
exams cost $65. Additionally, there is a non-refundable, non-transferable
$20 administration fee for all CLEP tests. Total cost is $85. If you are a current FLC
student, your student account will be charged the $20 fee when you schedule
your appointment. If you are a non-FLC student, you must mail a $20
check before making your appointment. CLEP exams may not be retaken
within a six-month period.
When
will I get my CLEP results?
When
you complete the computer CLEP, you will receive an unofficial score
report immediately (excluding English Composition with Essay). This is the only
score report you will receive. An official score report is mailed to
the college or university of your choice once your payment has cleared
and CLEP verifies that you have not tested within the last 6 months.
If you have taken the CLEP and need your scores mailed to Fort Lewis
College, call CLEP at (609) 771.7865.
